Actions of the Lifeduna Proyect

<body topmargin="0" leftmargin="0"> <table cellSpacing="0" cellPadding="0" width="750" border="0"> <tbody> <tr> <td vAlign="top" width="446"> <h3> ACTIONS AND WORKS TO DO</h3> <p class="mini" align="justify"><b>ELIMINATION OF THE PROMENADE.</b><br> During the 70s, movable dunes were destroyed and in its place a promenade was built.<br> Nowadays, this promenade does not meet the function for which it was built and it is very deteriorated. Even more, it causes an impassable barrier for the growth and the development of dune embryos, and cosequently for the natural regeneration of the area. This is helping the regression that the beach and the pine forest suffer nowadays.<br> <a href="images/video3_planta_y_arena.avi" target="_blank">VIDEO 3 (Plant and sand)</a> and <a href="images/video4_Muro_y_arena.avi" target="_blank">VIDEO 4 (Fence and sand)</a>.<br> The aim is the demolition of the promenade and its substitution by a chain of movable dunes in order to try to restore the balance among costline ecosystems.</p> <p class="mini"><img src="images/linea.gif" border="0" width="446" height="1"></p> <h4 class="mini" align="justify"><b>ELIMINATION OF ROADS AND PARKING LOTS.<br> </b>In the 60s and 70s a wide network of roads and parking lots was built all along <i>la Devesa</i>.<br> Today, many of these roads and parking lots are not necessary and many of them are seriously deteriorated.<br> The aim is the demolition of the remains of this infrastructure and the rebuilding of a new road with materials and shapes that keep with the environment.</h4> <p><img src="images/linea.gif" border="0" width="446" height="1"></p> <h4 class="mini" align="justify"><b>INFRASTRUCTURES ELIMINATION AND INTEGRATION.<br> </b>There are plenty of septic tanks (right) and drinkable water reservoirs (left) distributed in <i>la Devesa</i>. Most of these infrastructures never got to accomplish the function for which they were built, since the urban development was never totally finished.<br> Nowadays patholes are not necessary and they can be even dangerous, specially for children and nocturnal passerbys that can fall into them.<br> The objective is the elimination of these infrastructures and the regeneration of the areas that now occupy this constructions.</h4> <p class="mini"><img src="images/linea.gif" border="0" width="446" height="1"></p> <h4 class="mini" align="justify"><b>DUNE FIXING</b><br> Once the new movable dunes are modelled, they will be fixed to avoid losing sand. For this purpose we use fences ("bardisas") built with Borró (<i>Spartina versicolor</i>) ") and reed (<i>Arundo donax</i>). After three or four years, when natural vegetations will have grown, fences will already be degraded, remaining a dune with a natural appearance.</h4> <p><img src="images/linea.gif" border="0" width="446" height="1"></p> <h4 class="mini" align="justify"><b>LAGOON REGENERATION.</b><br> During the Urban Developing Plan almost every lagoon in <i>la Devesa</i> was filled. The sand used for the silting up came from the devastated movable dunes. This deed caused a serious alteration of the typical vegetation and fauna of this ecosystem.<br> The aim is the regeneration of these areas trough the withdrawal of the sand poured during the 60s, and use it for the reconstruction of movable dunes (see video).<br> With this deed we try to recover this ecosystem, characterised by being temporarily flooded and by its high salt concentrations.</h4> <p><img src="images/linea.gif" border="0" width="446" height="1"></p> <h4 class="mini" align="justify"><b>"SAMARUC" AND "FARTET" INTRODUCTION.<br> </b>The population of these endemic fishes of the Comunidad Valenciana has been seriously reduced due to the devastation of their habitat.<br> The aim is to reinforce its population by releasing specimen in one of the regenerated lagoons which will stay permanently flooded.</h4> <p><img src="images/linea.gif" border="0" width="446" height="1"></p> <h4 class="mini" align="justify"><b>PRODUCTION, PREPARATION AND PLANTATION OF VEGETATION.</b><br> The main objective is to accelerate the regeneration of these new areas. For that purpose seeds of autochthonous species will be collected in <i>la Devesa</i> and will be grown in El Saler Municipal Nurseries of the Town Hall of Valencia.<br> Once the crops are developed and the environmental conditions are achieved, the next step will be the plantation in fields.<br> Apart from the characteristic species of movable dunes, it is planned to plant the Red juniper (<i>Juniperus oxycerdus Subsp. macrocarpa</i>), a specie extremely sensitive to sulphides. For more information see Evolution of <i>la Devesa</i>.</h4> <p><img src="images/linea.gif" border="0" width="446" height="1"></p> <h4 class="mini" align="justify"><b>ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CAMPAIGN.</b><br> The aim is to inform about the situation of the Project and try to give more knowledge to people about how ecosystems work. For this purpose the following deeds will be executed:<b><br> <br> Leaflets, informative posters, a Web and a video. </b>In them the different aspects of Life Project will be reflected and there will be information about the regeneration of the dune habitat.<br> <b>A play</b>. In this play the condition of dunes of <i>la Devesa</i> in the XIII century will be reflected. In previous campaigns we have performed plays in which we reflected the changes suffered by the Natural Park all along the history. See the plays "<i>Abd-Al-Aziz i su Albuhera</i>"and "<i>nuestro Sueño</i>".<br> <b>A popular plantation.</b> Citizens will be able to collaborate in the recuperation of dunes.
